2023 WOW – What a year! It’s been a good one and I have a lot to be grateful for as 2023 draws to a close. I absolutely love putting together these posts and looking back on the many adventures that I have had with you all. Here’s how 2023 looked and a few stories and highlights along the way.
I’m looking forward to capturing more magic & mayhem in 2024!
Winter – Spring ’23
The 2023 wedding season started early, with Sarah & George’s beautiful candlelit wedding in Dartmouth in February. This was a stunning day, taking in a slice of coastal Devon as Sarah arrived by boat to St Petrox Church. After the church ceremony, we hiked over the coastal path to their drinks reception at Little Dartmouth. It was a gorgeous winter wedding day. I’m always inspired by winter weddings as the light is just divine! Check out Sophie & Jamie’s engagement photos from early February at Daymer Bay. We managed to capture the most stunning sunset at 5.30pm!
Before the busy period started I enjoyed winter & springtime family shoots and food photography with Sarah Raisbeck. This year we worked together to create seasonal food stories throughout the year. This included foraging wild garlic in the spring, seaweed in the summer and mushrooms in autumn. We focused on sustainability and featured small farms, including School Farm and Taw River Dairy. These stories have been featured regularly in Devon Life Magazine. In March three images of mine from our book ‘Natural Sweet Bakes’ were shortlisted for Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2023!
My first big wedding of the year was Nairi & Liam’s country shindig at The Oak Barn in Devon in late April. This was a gorgeous time of year to get married, with the tulips in full bloom and the trees still winter bare. The day ended with sparklers and happy faces around a warm fire.
Summer Weddings ’23
Summer hit in a riot of colour for Lucy & Nathan’s Glastonbury Festival themed wedding at Splotts Moor Farm in Glastonbury. This was an epic day, filled with music, food & laughter and topped with a beautiful, full moon rise at sunset. I absolutely love this venue so it was a real treat to be there and share the celebrations! Thanks to Daniel for capturing the magic with me.
Throughout summer I got to visit other incredible venues, some old favourites and some new! Summer highlights included; giggles with Mary & Rahul at Blackpool Sands Beach, hippy fun at the Yurt Camp wedding venue for Stephanie & Chris’s Buddhist wedding, windy adventures at Carswell Farm with Bethany & Brendon, Carly & Craig’s candlelit ceremony at Pengersick Castle and traditional Jewish dancing with Sarah & Alex at Mosshayne Farm.
Another summer highlight was being a finalist in the Muddy Stilettos Awards ‘Best Wedding Photographer in Devon’ category. Thanks to all of my couples who voted for me.
Alongside summer weddings, I worked on a commission for Surfers Against Sewage. This involved documenting river users along the Dart. I’ve included a few of these images in this selection and you can view more here.
Autumn ’23
In my wedding stories I love to document the shifting seasons and autumn is always such a photogenic time of year. The season started well, with Suzy & Jeremy’s late summer / early autumn wedding at Suzy’s family home in Modbury in early September. The glorious sunshine was perfect for their outdoor humanist ceremony. It was a joy to be there and to photograph the colourful celebrations and grab a few shots of the happy couple underneath the ripening apple trees.
The following week I visited another of my favourite wedding venues, River Cottage. I’d been really looking forward to Sophie & Jamie’s wedding for a while and it was the perfect September day. The guests enjoyed a hilarious moment when I landed in the tree trough at the end of their confetti line!! Autumn is a fab season to cuddle up in the yurt at River Cottage and enjoy a cosy fire and chocolate truffles.
Late autumn I photographed two elopement weddings, one in Devon and one in Glastonbury. Free of the usual formalities, these weddings were a lot of fun! I had a real adventure with Rachel & Lewis on Dartmoor, where we got absolutely soaking wet in a torrential downpour!! It’s always a blessing to visit Glastonbury too so thanks for having me along, Laura & Kev. It was magical to photograph a Samhain / Halloween handfasting.
A highlight of Autumn and an absolute highlight of the year was winning the LPA (Lisa Pritchard Agency) Futures competition. This unique competition supports and promotes emerging commercial photographers. I was selected alongside two very talented photographers, Chris Bethall and Tim Jobling. You can read more about it on the LPA website here. In October I had my first job through LPA. It was wonderful to visit the National Theatre and photograph families enjoying the Witches Adventure Trail.
I hope you have enjoyed this selection of weddings, families, portraits and other documentary images. Please check out my 2022 in pictures for more and get in touch if you’d like to book me for a shoot! I am a Dartington Wedding Photographer, based in Dartington, Totnes in South Devon and happy to travel.
