Analogue Film Photography Weddings Devon – Portraits in Medium Format
There’s something unmistakable about analogue film.
The softness. The depth. The way skin tones glow. The way a moment feels held rather than captured.
I love working with film and often shoot personal projects using my medium format camera. You can check out some galleries here. Over the past year, I’ve been offering medium format analogue film photography at weddings here in Devon — and it has become one of my favourite ways to photograph portraits. It has an incredible way of shifting energy and slowing things down so you are more in the moment. There’s also a magic that film has that is hard to emulate in digital cameras. Perhaps it’s the pure nostalgia or the roughness and imperfection. In a world saturated with perfect imagery – HD and now AI – it’s refreshingly human!
I’ve shot a couple of recent weddings with medium format as an option and you can see the results in the galleries below. The weddings were at River Cottage (which really lends itself to the organic nature of film) and Follaton House & Arboretum in Totnes. The winter trees and light made for a beautiful aesthetic on film here. If you’re planning a wedding at River Cottage, Follaton House in Totnes, or anywhere across Devon, and you love timeless, artistic imagery, this might be for you. Read on for more info about how I work with film photography. It is included as part of a day package but can be an add on for any amount of coverage! Check out my prices & packages here.

Why Choose Analogue Film for Your Devon Wedding?
Digital photography is fast and flexible — and I absolutely use it throughout the day. But film slows everything down in the most beautiful way.
With medium format film:
- Portraits feel intentional and unrushed
- Colours are soft, romantic and true to life
- Skin tones have a natural, luminous quality
- Images have a depth that feels almost painterly
There’s no screen to check. No rapid bursts. Just light, composition, and trust.
For couples who love fine art, nostalgia, or simply want something a little different, analogue film photography adds something very special to a Devon wedding.
How Film Fits Into Your Wedding Day
If you choose analogue film photography for your Devon wedding, it doesn’t replace digital coverage — it complements it.
I use medium format film for the couple portraits, rather than candid moments throughout the day. It’s a slower, more intentional way of working with you and capturing your portraits together.
Is Analogue Film Photography Right for You?
You might love film if:
- You’re drawn to fine art photography
- You love soft, natural colours
- You value quality over quantity
- You appreciate craftsmanship and process
- You want something timeless rather than trend-led
Film isn’t about perfection. It’s about feeling. I personally love the authentic and organic quality of film and I use film stock which goes with my usual vibrant palette so you won’t be disappointed.
Here’s an example of a project that I predominantly shot on film during the winter months on Dartmoor https://www.emmastoner.com/work/hillyfield
