Wild Celtic Winter Solstice | Boho Cornwall Photographer

Happy Winter Solstice folks! I love this time of year… getting cosy & celebrating the festivities with friends & family. The yule traditions are ancient and were celebrated thousands of years ago by our Celtic ancestors. They had 8 fire festivals and Winter Solstice was one of them, marking the shortest day and the return of the light… A very important occasion for communities dependant of agriculture and farming. And also a fun way to use up food gathered for the winter!

For this shoot I wanted to get back to basics with some wild styling, using traditional berries and fir cones etc to give an earthy Christmas feel. The stag, thistle & tree of life are three symbols used throughout which herald back to these ancient times. I had a couple of locations in mind for the outdoor shoots – both wild & rugged and situated in the western-most tip of Cornwall. The Nine Maidens stonecircle is situated in the moor and surrounded by red heather, such a beautiful backdrop for my flame haired model Libby. Porthgwarra beach was the perfect windy cove for the second part of the shoot with twin sisters Victoria & Lauren. This is one of the many Poldark locations in Cornwall and I definitely tried to channel and bit of Poldark magic for the overall feel of the shoot! Boho Cornwall specialises in elopements in West Cornwall so it was the perfect space for our cosy set-up. The table for two creates and lovely intimate feel and romantic setting. I could imagine a couple enjoying a lovely time here before setting off for a romantic adventure in the wilds of West Cornwall!

The gorgeous Celtic / pagan wedding dresses are eco-friendly & organic – a creation of Celtic Fusion Design. They were a perfect fit with our stunning wild florals, designed by Jeni at Twigs & Greens. Again, a perfect fit with Emily at Queen Bee Cakes, who makes exquisite cakes with a wild feel. The whole team for the shoot was magic and I really loved putting it all together. This was photographed and styled last year and really wanted to blog it then but it was awaiting publication in Wed Magazine and on The Natural Wedding Company blog. I’m super-excited to finally be able to add it to mine! Hopefully the pics provide some inspiration for anyone planning a winter wedding… I hope you all have a wonderful festive period.
